Some Of The Best Films Are Summer Films.

As we all know it won’t be summer for too much longer in the UK so here are some films that will make it feel a bit more like summer.  These are some of my all time favourite movies and make me happy every time I see them.

Friday the 13th (1980, Sean S. Cunningham)

This might not be what you immediately think of for a summer film but this film started the high-school-kids-going-camping-in-the-woods horror genre. This makes me think about fun evenings in the summer around a camp fire with your friends, eating smores, drinking beer until you have sex and die. Truly what I love about summer.

High School Musical 2 (2007, Kenny Ortega)

Yes, this is quite different from the first film or is it the prequel maybe? This film has everything you want, bad jokes, questionable acting, singing, and Zac Efron dramatically stomping and singing in a golf course. I dare you to watch this without watching, it’s impossible.

The Parent Trap (1998, Nancy Meyers)

A complete classic and summer favourite. What more do you want, it’s set at a summer camp, Lindsay Lohan plays a pair of twins; one who is posh and English and the other a tom-boy American. A classic formula of success!

We’re The Millers (2013, Rawson Marshall Thurber)

I mainly like this film for Will Poutler who plays Kenny. He’s a very funny actor and is one of the reasons he makes this film funny. Otherwise it’s a classic road trip film about smuggling weed into America.

Jaws (1975, Steven Spielberg)

Of course a Steven Spielberg film needed to be on the list and Jaws screams summer, literally it has lots of people screaming in it. It has suspense, iconic music, iconic dialogue and great practical effects.

Super 8 (2011, J.J. Abrams)

This film is love letter the Spielberg films, it has everything you want; a group of kids, summer holidays, set in a small town and aliens. It’s true Spielberg film by J.J. Abrams so has great sci-fi and direction. It has suspense, a bit of romance, comedy and adventure.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006, Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris)

This film truly has everything comedy, family, road-trip, sadness, heart-warming and an inappropriate dance routine for a child. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry and makes me smile all you want from a summer evening when your sweating any way.

The Way Way Back (2013, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash)

This film has similar feelings and themes of the previous but a bit more modern. The acting is fantastic and is funny mainly because of Sam Rockwell’s improvisation but once again I warn you, you will cry and feel things.

Addams Family Values (1993, Barry Sonnenfeld)

The last two films are my favourite of all time. The first is Addams Family Values, I’m going to put it out there I think the sequel is better than the original. It has Joan Cusack in it for God sake. It’s got summer camp, spooky goings on, funny iconic one liners and an amazing plot. This film just makes me happy.

The Goonies (1985, Richard Donner)

This is my favourite summer film and another Spielberg film. It’s a nostalgic summer film it makes you think of your childhood and your great long summers that seemed to be full of adventure maybe not like in the film. It’s funny, adventure, a pirate map, classic bad guys, treasure and …Sloth. It just gives you that good feeling you want after a hot day. Hey you guys, you got to watch it.

All these films, maybe not Friday the 13th and Jaws, are all about giving the audience a good feeling.  That feeling that everything is alright and anything is possible, even finding your twin, stopping an alien invasion and finding buried treasure. That’s probably why I like these films they make everything better and give me a warm glow… like the sun. Ok I’ll finish.

Enjoy The Summer From Indoors. Lucy.
